Detection of H2 Emission from Mira B in UV Spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope

چکیده
We present ultraviolet spectra of Mira’s companion star from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The companion is generally assumed to be a white dwarf surrounded by an accretion disk fed by Mira’s wind, which dominates the UV emission from the system. The STIS UV spectrum is dominated by numerous, narrow H2 lines fluoresced by H I Lyα, which were not detected in any of the numerous observations of Mira B by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The high temperature lines detected by IUE (e.g., C IV λ1550) still exist in the STIS spectrum but with dramatically lower fluxes. The continuum fluxes in the STIS spectra are also much lower, being more than an order of magnitude lower than ever observed by IUE, and also an order of magnitude lower than fluxes observed in more recent HST Faint Object Camera objective prism spectra from 1995. Thus, the accretion rate onto Mira B was apparently much lower when STIS observed the star, and this change altered the character of Mira B’s UV spectrum. H 2 Emission from Mira B in UV Spectra from HST 1 Brian
We analyze Lyα fluoresced H2 lines observed in the UV spectrum of Mira B. We identify 13 different sequences fluoresced by 13 different H2 transitions within the Lyα line. The observed H2 line ratios within these sequences imply significant line opacity, so we use a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to model the line ratios, correcting for opacity effects. We find the observed line ratios can...

We present new Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of Mira A’s wind-accreting companion star, Mira B. We find that the strongest lines in the FUSE spectrum are H2 lines fluoresced by H I Lyα. A previously analyzed Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrum also shows numerous Lyα-fluoresced H2 lines. The HST lines are all Lyman band lines, while the FUSE H2 lines are mostly We...
متن کاملReverse engineering a spectrum: using fluorescent spectra of molecular hydrogen to recreate the missing Lyman-α line of pre-main sequence stars
The hydrogen Lyman-α (Lyα) line, a major source of ionization of metals in the circumstellar disks of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, is usually not observed due to absorption by interstellar and circumstellar hydrogen. We have developed a technique to reconstruct the intrinsic Lyα line using the observed emission in the H2 B-X lines that are fluoresced by Lyα. We describe this technique and the...

We observed Hubble V, the brightest HII region complex in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, at near-infrared (1.8–2.4 μm) wavelengths using the Cooled Grating Spectrometer 4 (CGS4) at the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope (UKIRT). The line emission maps of Hubble V show the typical structure of a photo-dissociation region (PDR) where an ionized core, traced by compact He I emission (2.0587 ...
متن کاملThe Far - Ultraviolet Spectra of TW Hya . II . Models of H 2 Fluorescence in a Disk 1
We measure the temperature of warm gas at planet-forming radii in the disk around the classical T Tauri star (CTTS) TW Hya by modelling the H2 fluorescence observed in HST/STIS and FUSE spectra. Strong Lyα emission irradiates a warm disk surface within 2 AU of the central star and pumps certain excited levels of H2. We simulate a 1D plane-parallel atmosphere to estimate fluxes for the 140 obser...
